The Moscow Zoo was founded in 1864 by a group of professor-biologists, K.F. Rulje, S.A. Usov and A.P. Bogdanov, from the Moscow State University. In 1919, the zoo was nationalized. In 1922, the ownership was transferred to the city of Moscow and has remained under Moscow's control ever since.
The zoo had an area of 10 hectares when it first opened, with 286 animals. In 1926, the zoo was expanded to adjacent lands, increasing the area to 18 hectares. The zoo's original buildings were wooden, built in the old Russian style with intricate wood trims.

I took an overnight train from St. Petersburg to Moscow without any incidents. The train left at 11:30 and arrived at 8:00 am. I basically went to sleep. I saw Moscow’s crowded subways at their busiest. It seems to be quite acceptable to push and shove your way on to them like everyone else. The stations are beautiful. Each one looks like a museum or concert hall. They are onto themselves an attraction. Just amazing for subway stations. I had to find my way to get my tickets for the Trans Siberian so I figured this would be a fool’s errand for me but through blind luck more than anything I figured out the subway and map and found the place in record time.

Nothing makes you want to stretch your legs like five and a half days on a train. We sprung from the wagon amid the unloading of duffel bags full of Chinese cigarettes and cheerfullly navigated the Lenin-lavished Moscow metro. Compared to Chinese characters, cyrillic seemed a modest challege and soon enough we were pronouncing the various signs and commercials along Arbat Street (whether we gathered their meaning was a different story).

Bad start to the day, as plane is delayed leaving Glasgow. Most British airports are penned in by fog; this is creating a backlog of planes waiting for take-off. Finally get away only 10 minutes late and make some time back in the air. Slight delay landing as we have to wait for a slot. Heathrow is so huge, neither of us can believe just how big it is.

I've visited Moscow and Saint-Petersburg with my mother by the end of May and beginning of June 2004. We purchased a package in Switzerland whereas the accommodation, the visits and excursions as well as the private tour guides and drivers for each city were included.

After a relatively sound night on the overnight train to Moscow, we arrived at Leningradsky railway station and again started our trawl through the city in hope of finding a hotel. Unfortunately, we had not read the guide books thoroughly enough before leaving and we discovered (a little too late) that there are very few hotels (especially cheap ones) in Russia and that you are generally advised not to visit the country without having previously booked. This is partly due to availability and partly due to the Russian's general distrust of foreign people.

Our Moscow experience has been a bit like Fawlty Towers! Our confidence was high having successfully navigated our way around a very sunny St. Petersburg, and our inital impressions on the overnight journey were good. It was an old train (everything looks very Russian!) that looked like something out of Harry Potter, but it was clean and warm and exciting.

But this time it is with my parents. In three days we've packed in quite a range of sites. We're taking the overnight train to Saint Petersburg tonight and they will be visiting me for about a week before returning to moscow to catch their return flight to america. Sometime later, I'll post some pictures.

    Poka,
    Carl
